Wikipedia and Flickr

Hey Everyone!

This week I have been looking into wikis, in particular Wikipedia. I am not comfortable contributing to Wikipedia myself, however, I had a look through the Wikipedia sandbox page to see if there were any articles that might need editing or improvements. Wikipedia sandbox allows users to test the editing functions of Wikipedia in a way that edits are not up for a long time as they are automatically cleaned up frequently. One article I found about the television show The Amazing Race was completely changed to be held in the Mushroom Kingdom. As the user had said:

The Amazing Race: MK 5 is the fifth instalment of the popular reality television show, The Amazing Race being held in The Mushroom Kingdom.”

This article is not a genuine article on Wikipedia as it is in the sandbox, however, it does somewhat show what can happen when anyone can edit the wiki page, as it can lead to unreliable information.

Also, this week I have been looking at Flickr and have created my own account. Setting up the account was fairly straight forward, although having to create a Yahoo account was a bit of a pain. I have also uploaded some photos that I took during my trip to London last year and one from the Great Ocean Road as well. I found that uploading photos onto flicker was easy as you only have to drag and drop them in. I think that it is a good way of sharing and organising your photos.

I have also grouped my photos that are related to each other through creating sets, so that my photos can be more organised. I had a look at some other flickr accounts but as of yet, I have not found anyone that I would like to follow. As I explore flickr further I will try and follow some people or organisations.

Here is the link for my flickr photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/120943315@N05/ .

I believe that each week I am learning more about these types of tools and technologies and improving my skills as well. I am also becoming more confident using them as well.

  1. Hello Lisette,
Great post - you might like to have a look at these library related flickr pages
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/britishlibrary/
they are my fav's so far.
Are you finding the flickr organisation better because you are able to tag things or is it that you are selective of the ones that you put up, rather than the plethora we all have in our computers?

    1. Hi Emma! Thanks for the links, they have some amazing images! I am now following the Library of Congress and the British Library as well! I think the organisation is better because I can label everything, but also at the moment because I haven't uploaded many photos yet.

  2. Hi Lisette, I had some pretty similar experiences with both Wikipedia and Flickr. Also enjoyed looking through your photostream! I can see how Flickr could really benefit photographers - getting some of their work out there, enabling them to share, etc. I'm still understanding how library organisations can use Flickr to reach more users. Checked out Emma's links and it seems to be a great way to gather together and expose some of the library's photo/visual collection.

  3. Hi Kate! I agree that Flickr can really help photographers share their work, etc. Yes, Emma's links does show a good way in which libraries can use Flickr to share their collection of images, etc.

  4. H everyone
Yes I agree visually libraries could use flickr to share their collections of images, also maybe if libraries become more and more as places where community events are organised such as an art exhibition or something they could display photos of this also.
